As most travellers know, the various language in different parts of the world pose a major consideration. Communication is key in everything, from ordering your food, to asking directions and conveying whatever it is you have to say. And here in Indonesia, that could really be a problem since most of them speak only their native language - Bahasa Indonesia. The staff in the UNFPA Office though speak English. But in restaurants, hotels, boutiques, malls, the taxi driver? They only speak bahasa. And it can be difficult at times.
That is why I feel the Philippines has so much advantage for development having English as the medium of instruction in schools, offices and other businesses. If only they realize their potentials for moving things forward and making things happen.
In doing advocacy work, you move for changes - policy and behavioral changes in people, communities and society in general. Thus, the message is carefully thought of in order to convey it properly and struck a chord to whoever is your target audience. This means it has to be delivered using a medium they can relate to and in a language they will understand. Otherwise, they will hear you but they will not listen.
Hmnnn... tough.
"To laugh often and much... to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children . . . to leave the world a better place. . . & to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived...
This is to have succeeded."
This is to have succeeded."
my random thoughts...
